Girl’s and Boy’s Teams do Holy Family Senior School Proud in Football Finals

Category : Blog

There was a historic victory on Wednesday the 24th as the Girls of Holy Family Senior School were crowned Cumann na mBunscol champions for the first time. The victory coincided with the boy’s team finishing as hard fought runners up in the shield final.

The girls, who were managed by Ms. Duff, Ms. O’ Keefe and Ms. Delaney put on a virtuoso performance as they displayed great teamwork, determination and skill to beat a well trained Ratheniska team.

Unfortunately for our boys team, they fell short against a good Abbeyleix team. A word of thanks must go to the management team of Mr. Malone, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Barry and Mr. Downey.

Well done to all involved as attention turns to a well deserved mid-term break for both teams.

Category : Blog News

A brief report on the visit and history of Colonel James Fitzmaurice. Written by Arjeta Kovaci from Mr. Dunne’s 6th Class.

An Irish Air Corps member came in to talk about his life as part of the air corps. He told us that as part of training he got to shoot a pistol, assault rifle, rocket launcher, throw grenades and use a few other weapons. He also told us that as part as the air corps he got to fly a various amounts of airplanes.

After that a man named Teddy Fennelly spoke to us about Ireland’s history about planes. He mainly spoke about a man called Colonel James Fitzmaurice. This man was the first man to fly to America from east to west. This man was born in Laois, here in Ireland and is a huge part of Ireland’s history. This man landed in New York in America. After he landed he was in Times Square for eighteen days. He told New York and all of America that he is Irish and that Ireland was a great country. He then became very famous. This was an amazing event in the history of Ireland.

THE COUNTY FINAL

Category : Blog

Match report compiled by Conor McCausland and Ciara Lee from Mr. O’ Connor’s 6th class.

Victorious Portlaoise Team who visited the school this week after winning the county final at the weekend.

The county final turned out to be an outstanding game on Sunday for Portlaoise Senior team. It was a tight game throughout, but the town pulled it out of the bag. It meant that O`Dempsey’s were in hard luck though.

As both teams came out onto the pitch their supporters cheered them loudly. As Morris Degan threw in the ball O’ Dempsey’s went on the attack. The attack was stopped by Cahir Healy and Gareth Dylan with the help of Kieran Lillis. The ball was then passed to Ciarán McEvoy and nicely put over the bar. Then the O’Dempsey keeper kicked it out and it was caught by Kieran Lillis.

Further into the game Portlaoise scored 2 goals and ran out winners by 7 points. Even though it was Portlaoise’s 11th year winning, O’Dempseys put up a great fight against Portlaoise and they can be very proud of themselves.

On monday the Portlaoise team brought the trophies to our school and met with the 5th and 6th classes.

Maybe the players will have inspired the pupils to play football or indeed any sport that they are thinking of trying

WELL DONE THE TOWN!!!
